Privacy
Effective 16 September 2026. Applies to the Kape studio at kape.kalter.tech and the Kape Recorder browser extension.
Kape is built so that your recordings never leave your computer. There is no account, no upload and no server that sees your files. This page says exactly what each part does.
The Kape Recorder extension
- What it records. Only when you press Start: the browser tab, window or screen you chose, as video. The tab's own sound and your microphone too, each only if you switch it on; Chrome asks for the microphone the first time.
- Where it goes. When you stop, the recording is handed to the Kape studio inside your browser and opens there. It is not sent anywhere, and the extension writes no files: the only way to keep a recording is to export it from the studio. If the studio cannot take it, the extension keeps the recording in memory and offers to try again or discard it.
- What it stores. Your last choice of capture source, countdown and sound switches, in the browser's extension storage on your computer. That is all.
- What it does not do. No analytics, no crash reports, no network requests, no reading of page content. The extension never contacts a server.
Why it asks for the permissions it asks for
- Read and change your data on kape.kalter.tech — that is the Kape studio. This is how the recording gets from the extension into the studio page when you stop. The extension runs on that site and on no other.
- Capture the tab, or a window or the screen — the recording itself, only after you press Start. For a window or the screen, Chrome asks you to pick one each time.
- The page you opened it on — once, at the start of a tab recording, to read the size of the page so the capture matches it exactly. It reads nothing else, and nothing on any other page.
- Storage — to remember your settings and whether a recording is running.
The Kape studio
The studio at kape.kalter.tech opens your recording from your disk and does all its work in the browser tab: backgrounds, cropping, trimming, and encoding the export. The file is never uploaded. Close the tab and nothing remains.
The website itself uses Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to count page views and measure loading speed. These do not use cookies and do not identify you. They see that a page was visited, not what you recorded.
Changes
If what Kape does with your data changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top moves. There is nothing to sign up for; this page is the record.
