Make a screen recording
worth posting.

Drop in a recording or a screenshot, or record one with the Chrome extension. Add a background, round the corners, crop, export. Nothing is uploaded.

The Kape studio: a screenshot placed on a background, with the scene list on the left and the frame and shadow controls on the right.

Features

Frame

Put the screen recording on a background, set the padding, round the corners, cast a shadow. Drag it anywhere in the frame and it snaps to centre, telling you the moment it lands.

Screenshots too

Not only recordings. Drop in a still and it takes the same background, frame and shape, then saves as a PNG instead of a video.

Export

Every frame encoded from the source rather than captured off the screen, and written straight to disk as it goes, so length costs time and not memory.

See it work.

Three of the things you will reach for most, recorded in the studio itself.

Three steps, and none of them leave your machine.

1

Drop it in

A recording or a screenshot. Kape reads the container and the codec, and says plainly if it cannot decode it.

2

Make it look right

Background, padding, corners, shadow, shape. Trim the dead air off each end. Everything updates as you drag.

3

Export it

Every frame encoded from the source, written straight to disk. A PNG instead, if you brought a screenshot.

Questions, answered.

Is it really free?
Yes, and there is nothing to buy later. If it saves you time you can leave a tip, but the whole thing works without one.
Where does my recording go?
Nowhere. Kape opens the file from your disk and does all the work in the browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can leak.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no email to hand over, and nothing to install — open the studio and drop a file in.
Can Kape record my screen for me?
Yes, in Chrome. The Kape Recorder extension records a browser tab, a window or the whole screen, with the tab's sound and your microphone if you want them, and opens the recording in the studio. Any recording your machine already makes works too.
Does it work on Windows and Linux?
Yes. Kape is a web app, so it runs wherever Chrome or Edge does: Windows, Linux, macOS and ChromeOS. There is no app to download.
Is Kape a free alternative to Screen Studio?
For the part most people want — a screen recording on a background, with rounded corners and a shadow, exported as an MP4 — yes, and Kape is free and runs in the browser on any operating system. Screen Studio is a paid Mac app that does more: it records, zooms in on the cursor and smooths its motion. Kape does not do that yet.
What goes in, and what comes out?
In: MP4, MOV and WebM recordings, and PNG, JPEG or WebP stills. Kape reads the container and the codec when you drop it, and says plainly if your browser cannot decode it. Out: an MP4 encoded from the source frames, written straight to disk as it goes, or a PNG if you brought a screenshot.
